CEDARE – Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe signed a memorandum of understanding with the UN Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) to enhance cooperation in the fields of sustainability, environmental management, data exchange, capacity building, and support for regional efforts to protect the Mediterranean Sea environment.
The memorandum of understanding was signed by:
H.E. Dr Khaled Fahmy, Executive Director of CEDARE and former Minister of Environment, and Ms. Susan Gardner, representing the United Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP). The agreement reaffirms the commitment of both parties to strengthening regional environmental governance, developing knowledge-based policies, and enhancing environmental resilience across the region.
The memorandum covers cooperation in several key areas, including:
โข Supporting the implementation of the Mediterranean Action Plans under UNEP/MAP
โข Joint environmental assessment and reporting
โข Management of natural resources, climate, and water
โข Strengthening the capacities of national and regional institutions
โข Exchange of data, knowledge, and best practices
โข Implementing joint initiatives that support the Sustainable Development Goals
โข Awareness-raising and education for sustainable development
H.E. Dr Khaled Fahmy emphasised that this strategic partnership represents an important step in strengthening CEDAREโs role as a regional institution supporting environmental protection and sustainable development in the Mediterranean region. He highlighted the importance of integrating CEDAREโs scientific expertise with the institutional mandate of UNEP/MAP.
The signing of the memorandum marks a continuation of the longstanding cooperation between both sides in supporting environmental policies and promoting the sustainable management of resources across the Mediterranean region.
