CEDARE Participates in Regional Conference on Agroecology in Tunis

Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE) recently participated in the Regional Conference on Agroecology: Science and Policy, held from January 29 to 31, 2025, in Tunis,Tunisia. Organized by the Sahara and Sahel Observatory – OSS and the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of CIHEAM Montpellier (IAMM). Ciheam – IAMM

The conference convened experts, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss agroecology as a viable solution to address food security, climate change, and environmental resilience in North Africa.

Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, CEDARE’s Senior Regional Water Resources Program Director, delivered a key intervention on the critical importance of assessing water requirements for green belts.

He highlighted the necessity of evaluating the types of water resources to be utilized, ensuring their availability and sustainability, particularly during the initial stages of establishing green belts.

Dr. AbuZeid’s insights stressed the need for integrated water resource management, to support sustainable agroecological practices in arid regions.

The conference facilitated collaboration among decision-makers, researchers, farmers, and civil society actors, aiming to promote agroecology as a vital approach to addressing environmental and food security challenges in North Africa.

Discussions focused on strengthening the link between scientific research and public policies to foster sustainable and resilient agricultural practices.
