CEDARE participated in the UNESCO Sub-Regional Arab Science Cooperation Forum, held from 19–20 May 2025 at the UNESCO Regional Office for UN Coordination for the Arab States in Beirut, in collaboration with #ASREN.
Representing CEDARE, Dr. Khaled AbuZeid, Water Program Manager, moderated the opening panel titled “Accelerating the Combating of the Causes & Impacts of Climate Change on Water Basins & Water-related Ecosystems.” The session featured technical presentations on the Litani River, Jordan River, and Lebanese aquifers, along with expert commentary from regional water policymakers and former ministers.
In a subsequent session, Dr. AbuZeid delivered a strategic intervention titled “Leveraging Science Diplomacy for Hydro Diplomacy in Transboundary Water Management,” where he proposed a regional initiative to assess Green/Blue Water resources in the Euphrates-Tigris River Basin using Remote Sensing technologies. Building on CEDARE’s experience in the Nile Basin, the initiative aims to promote equitable and reasonable water use in shared watercourses. The proposal received strong support from UNESCO, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, ASREN, and various stakeholders, who emphasized its importance for bridging data gaps and strengthening water rights in complex transboundary contexts.
Such regional scientific dialogues reinforce CEDARE’s role as a hub for water governance, scientific cooperation, and knowledge exchange in the Arab region.
