International Expert – Senior Regional Lead Consultant for the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus
Dr. Mohamed Aboelwafa is the Senior Regional Lead Consultant for the Water–Energy–Food–Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus at CEDARE, providing strategic leadership and technical advisory support to advance integrated resource management, climate resilience, and sustainable development across Egypt and the Arab region and Europe.
With over 35 years of experience, he is a recognized expert in agricultural economics, agribusiness, water resources, climate change, and sustainable development. Previously, as Agriculture and Water Team Leader at USAID/Egypt for the last 16 years, he managed a multi-million-dollar portfolio focused on climate-smart agriculture, food security, integrated water resources management (IWRM), and the WEFE Nexus. Throughout his career, he has led the design and implementation of development programs exceeding US$170 million in partnership with governments, international organizations, and the private sector.
Before USAID, Dr. Aboelwafa held senior positions with GIZ (formerly GTZ) and worked with organizations including KfW, IFPRI, IDRC, the World Bank, and FAO. He has also undertaken USAID assignments in Jordan, Nigeria, and Qatar, supporting regional initiatives in agriculture, water resources, and food security.
Dr. Aboelwafa holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics and a postgraduate diploma in Agricultural Food Marketing from the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza, Spain.
The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) was established in1992 as an international inter-governmental Organization with diplomatic status.
