In the framework of cooperation between the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) and George Mason University in the United States, CEDARE hosted Dr. Osama Salem, Professor at George Mason University and former Chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering. The collaboration aims to conduct joint research studies to promote urban sustainability and resilience in the Arab region.
Dr. Hossam Allam, International Expert and Director of the Sustainable Growth Programme at CEDARE, commended Dr. Salem’s conceptual paper titled “Sustainable and Resilient Urban Development in the Arab Region.” The paper presents a preliminary framework for a regional research project designed to support sustainable urban development in response to the challenges of climate change and rapid urban expansion. CEDARE will collaborate with Dr. Salem to implement this research initiative.
The paper focuses on adopting innovative urban strategies, including sustainable infrastructure planning, natural resource management, enhancing energy efficiency, and improving quality of life in Arab cities, while taking into account the impacts of climate change and rapid urban growth. It also highlights the importance of regional cooperation and research partnerships among academic institutions, government bodies, and the private sector to strengthen knowledge exchange and develop long-term resilient urban solutions.
CEDARE’s support for this initiative reflects its commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation in the fields of environment and sustainable development, and to empowering policymakers and experts with practical, evidence-based solutions that foster sustainable and resilient urban development across the Arab region.
