4. Sustainability Accreditation

by CEDARE Team

There are several types of sustainability accreditation/certification, depending on whether you are accrediting an organization, building, infrastructure project, product, or sustainability

Main types

Type Examples Main focus

🏢 Environmental Management ISO 14001 Environmental management, compliance, resource efficiency and continual improvement. ISO 14001:2026 is the current edition.

⚡ Energy Management ISO 50001 Energy efficiency, energy performance and reduction of energy use.

💧 Water Efficiency ISO 46001 Water-efficiency management systems and improving water performance.

🏗️ Green Building LEED, BREEAM Energy, water, materials, indoor environment, carbon, biodiversity and building performance. BREEAM covers design, construction, operation and refurbishment.

🛣️ Sustainable Infrastructure BREEAM Infrastructure / Envision Sustainability and resilience of roads, water infrastructure, utilities and other civil infrastructure. BREEAM Infrastructure specifically covers civil engineering and infrastructure projects.

🌱 Product / Eco-label EU Ecolabel, EPD Environmental performance of products across their lifecycle.

🔄 Circular Economy ISO 14040/14044, circularity schemes Lifecycle assessment, resource efficiency, reuse and waste reduction.

👷 Social / Safety ISO 45001 and social standards Occupational health, safety and social responsibility.

🌍 Climate / Carbon Carbon-neutral/net-zero schemes, GHG standards GHG measurement, reduction, carbon management and climate action.

📊 ESG / Sustainability Reporting GRI, ISSB and other reporting frameworks Sustainability/ESG disclosure, governance, environmental and social performance.

For projects, I would organize accreditation into 5 levels

  1. Organization → ISO 14001 + ISO 50001 + ISO 45001

  • Project → Sustainability/ESG assessment

  • Building → LEED / BREEAM

  • Infrastructure → BREEAM Infrastructure / Envision

  • Product & Materials → EPD / Eco-label / LCA

Important distinction

Accreditation ≠ certification ≠ rating

  • Accreditation: confirms that a certification/assessment body is competent to perform conformity assessment.
    • Certification: independent confirmation that an organization/product/system meets a defined standard.
    • Rating/assessment: scores the sustainability performance of a project or asset, often resulting in a level such as Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum.

For example, EGAC accredits certification bodies in Egypt against ISO/IEC 17021-1; the certification body then audits an organization against standards such as ISO 14001.

For your project-cycle sustainability framework, I would recommend creating a single “Project Sustainability Accreditation Framework” combining ISO 14001 + ISO 50001 + ISO 46001 + climate resilience + social/ESG + green building/infrastructure certification.
