A useful project-management principle is:
Sustainability should be evaluated on Life-Cycle Cost (LCC), not only Initial Cost.
For example, a sustainable project might cost 5–10% more initially, but achieve 15–30% lower operating costs over its lifetime, depending on the project type and technology.
For infrastructure projects, I would recommend adding a “Sustainability Cost” section to the project cost estimate, divided into CAPEX + OPEX + avoided costs + residual value, so that sustainability becomes part of the normal project business case rather than an extra item.
