The Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) has launched a Farmer Field School dedicated to enhancing mango productivity and quality in Sol Village, Atfih Center, Giza Governorate. The initiative is part of the project “Enhancing Economic Independence and Community Empowerment through Climate-Smart Agriculture and Technological Innovation (Smart Villages)”, funded by the Drosos Foundation and implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation and the Agricultural Extension and Rural Development Research Institute.
The Farmer Field School is conducted over the course of a full year, enabling farmers to gain practical experience across the various stages of the agricultural season—from the end of the previous season and preparations for the new one, through pruning, growth, and production stages, to harvesting—while focusing on the application of sound and effective agricultural practices.
The field school focuses on mango production, one of the crops for which the area is well known, aiming to enhance farmers’ knowledge and skills in plant protection. It also promotes sound agricultural practices that contribute to achieving high-quality yields, reducing crop losses and production-related challenges, improving the efficiency of natural resource use, and strengthening rural communities’ resilience to the impacts of climate change
The project reflects CEDARE’s efforts to support rural
communities, promote sustainable agricultural development, and advance climate-smart agricultural practices, contributing to efforts to address the challenges posed by climate change, support rural livelihoods, and enhance food security.
