On this #DESERTIFICATIONDAY, we highlight CEDARE’s commitment to combating land degradation through the Healthy Ecosystems for Rangeland Development (HERD) project in Matrouh. Over the past four years, the project has contributed to transforming arid landscapes through:
Empowering Communities
• Supported pastoral livelihoods via revolving funds
• Trained over 100 locals in sustainable rangeland management
Influencing Policy
• Drafted Egypt’s first legislation for rangeland protection
• Developed a national database for natural resource planning
Restoring Ecosystems
• Established 14 model farms promoting sustainable practices
• Rehabilitated over 5,000 hectares of degraded land
Implemented in partnership with IUCN and @DRC_Egypt, and funded by Global Environment Facility, HERD stands as a scalable model for land restoration in arid regions.
