The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is leading the charge to combat desertification through several ambitious initiatives and international collaboration.

By investing in sustainable land management, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is spearheading regional efforts to combat desertification and secure a greener future.

Some of the most notable projects include:

United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP16 in Riyadh: Hosting the global summit on desertification, where over $12 billion was pledged for land restoration under the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership.

Saudi Green Initiative: Aiming to restore 40 million hectares of degraded land and drive afforestation efforts across the country by 2030.

• National Center for Vegetation Cover and Combating Desertification: Established by the Saudi Ministry of Environment Water and Agriculture, this center focuses on developing and preserving vegetation, managing national parks, and combating desertification across the Kingdom.

Al Baydha Project: A pioneering land restoration initiative utilizing permaculture and rainwater harvesting to rehabilitate arid landscapes.

• Prince Sultan Institute for Environmental, Water and Desert Research: Advancing scientific research on desert environments, land degradation, and sustainable development.

CEDARE’s Land Resources Program is also tackling desertification issues by advancing sustainable land management and implementing innovative solutions through international and regional partnerships.
