Healthy Ecosystem for Rangeland Development (HERD) Jordan & Egypt

Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE), in collaboration with IUCN and the Desert Research Center, the وزارة البيئة المصرية – Ministry of Environment (Egypt) and the الصندوق الهاشمي لتنمية البادية الأردنيةHashemite Fund for Badia Development, the Royal Botanical Garden (Jordan) and the Ministry of Agriculture (Jordan), وزارة الزراعة الاردنية successfully implemented the Global Environment Facility (GEF)- funded HERD project in Jordan and Matruh (Egypt).

The Matruh component was Implemented by Cedare’s Environmental Governance Programme (EGP) and IUCN iin collaboration with the Matruh governorate.

The project implemented real change through:

– rehabilitation of 500 feddans using the ancient Bedouin HIMA approach, (a native Bedouin approach used for centuries to protect rangelands) . The name HIMA comes from the Arabic word which means protection.

-39 rain harvesting wells constructed

-Veterinary care for sheep, goats, and camels

-Economic empowerment through a revolving fund for women and youth
