Sustainable Recycling Industries Project Paves the way for a solid e waste industry in Egypt

Within the framework of the Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) project, which is being implemented in Egypt, Ghana, Peru, Columbia and South Africa, CEDARE, in coordination with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) and the The Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt, virtually convened the 11th steering committee meeting on February 10, 2025.

The meeting was chaired by the Ministry of Communication & Information Technology (Egypt) and co-chaired by the Swiss Embassy. It brought together key project stakeholders, including government representatives from the Ministry of Finance; the Ministry of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation; as well as project partners from the Swiss Embassy; the World Resources Forum (WRF); dss+; and Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE).

Meeting objectives:

-present the project’s key highlights up to December 2024 across its four main components: policy & legislative framework, normative requirements, business optimization & value chains, and solutions for problematic fractions.

-identify follow-up activities and next steps, including monitoring the implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, establishing a centralized auditing system, advancing the institutionalization of e-waste management curriculum in Egyptian WE Technological Schools, supporting the refurbishment sector, launching an e-waste platform in Egypt, finalizing a study on cooling & freezing appliances, and organizing a closing event for the project in April 2025.
