Centre for Environment & Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE) participated in Saudi Water Week, held from 28 June to 2 July, where it presented its regional vision for advancing sustainable water resources management and accelerating the transition towards climate-smart agriculture. The Centre highlighted climate-smart agriculture as a key pathway to strengthening water and food security while enhancing resilience to the impacts of climate change across the Arab region.
During the event, CEDARE experts presented a set of strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening water and food security and enhancing climate resilience. These included promoting policy coherence and integrated planning across the water, environment, agriculture, and energy sectors; mainstreaming sustainability indicators into planning and decision-making processes; and strengthening legislative and institutional frameworks that support the sustainable management of shared natural resources.
The Centre also underscored the importance of fostering regional cooperation, investing in innovation and technology, and empowering local communities as essential pillars for building resilient agricultural systems capable of adapting to climate change. CEDARE emphasised that these measures are critical to ensuring the sustainable management of water resources and advancing the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the region.
Throughout the technical sessions, CEDARE experts showcased several successful initiatives that demonstrate the practical application of these principles, including the Almuruna Project, the HERD Project for Rangeland Management, and the Smart Villages Project. These initiatives promote sustainable water resources management, support the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, and strengthen the adaptive capacity of rural communities to respond to the impacts of climate change.
